The Gardens of Gertrude JekyllRichard BisgroveThe gardens of Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932) have influenced good garden design throughout the world. While many of Jekyll's gardens and original plantings have disappeared, and only a handful of her plans are well-known, thousands survive in archives. Richard Bisgrove has selected a representative sample from this remarkable collection, and the designs-including plans for Jekyll's three American gardens as well as for many of her British gardens-have been redrawn by an accomplished watercolorist and relabeled to make them more accessible to the nonspecialist. Together they provide an astonishing record of Jekyll's versatility as a garden designer and of the painstaking attention to detail that she applied to every aspect of her art. Gardens and GardeningHow popular is gardening?Gardening is popular worldwide. According to the US National Gardening Association, three out of four households in the U.S. (that's about 82,000,000 households) were involved in one or more indoor or outdoor lawn and garden activities in 2004. This level of participation was roughly the same as the five-year average seen between 1999-2003. US gardening consumers spent an average of $449 on their lawns and gardens in 2004 - slightly below the $457 average spent in 2003 and the $466 average spent in 2002. If consumer expenditure is anything to go by, wealthier, older, better-educated and maritally stable people are the keenest gardeners. The types of households spending more than the US national average on lawns and gardens in 2004 included:
